The main reason why Apple computers sell is because of the cult like following they have amassed. The vast majority of people that use them only do so because it is the "IN" thing. The majority of them do no editing of music or videos or nothing in the artsy realm and thus are overpaying for their computer experience. Its really too bad as a PC of equal specs would cost less than half of what a macbook costs. If only these people who think apple is soo amazing were a bit more tech savvy they would realize that with some modifications you can boot OSX onto a PC.

Not true at all. Most people that buy them don't give two shits about specs, it's not like they're going to try high-end gaming on a Macbook. It only needs to be powerful enough to do their simple tasks (gaming on low at most). Most importantly, they want the Apple experience - cool hardware, ease of use, good customer service, etc. I don't know about the latest gens, but last I dealt with them the laptops are very slim and have long battery life - comparable laptops would only be 20% or so cheaper, which isn't that big of a big deal.

As for being tech savvy, people just don't have interest in going that far. You can save lots of money by building your own PC, too, as I do, but not everyone has the time or patience for that. I see you're 22, around college age, so you might be as stingy as I am (unlikely!), but also note that older people tend to have a lot more disposable income. An extra $200 to them is nothing, at least compared to taking the time/effort learning stuff they're not particularly interested in.

Let me ask you this - if money weren't a factor, what would you think of Apple? I don't own any Apple products myself, but I use them often enough (via family, friends). If I had lots of cash to spare, I'd see no reason not to buy my own.

Personally I would never own an apple product by choice. Currently i have an iphone 5 for work but other than that I detest them as a company. I think they rip consumers off with their exhorbitant prices. But then again thats my opinion. However one thing that is not an opinion is the fact that they are super closed when it comes to their platforms. They make it retartedly hard and in many cases IMPOSSIBLE to modify their platforms in any way. Be it hardware or Jailbreaking or anything of that sort. Apple is extremely closed off and until that changes I will never by choice own any of their products. Especially since I can find an oftentimes better experience (customer service aside) from a different company.

As far as hardware price difference Apple's are twice the money when it comes to anything. Not just gaming. Ive seen many an advert advertising a 2.6 GHZ dual core 6-8 GB ram with a SSD and 15" for about $800-900~. Just over half the price of a 13" Macbook Pro. And thats just off the top of my head. Im sure with some looking (newegg.com and such) I could even cut off another $100 or so.

Now Im not saying my opinion is infallable but TO ME. Apple products are disgustingly overpriced. The only reason people use them apart from editing and artsy tings of that nature is because of the Apple Phenomenon that has hit th world. Apple products are the COOL thing right now. However I possibly see a slow changing of the guard happening though with Google and some other companies continuing to claw marketshare from apple. But unfortunately (IMHO) apple will never die. The just wont enjoy the dominance that they have enjoyed these past few years

Long Live SHIO!
