true the only consoles that had any success that gen was the gameboy advance and the PS2 but the reason why i think those 2 mario games can help the wii u big time is cause a 3d mario game and a mario kart are the best selling games for the 3DS and original wii 

A console is much different then a handheld.

A parent will buy his child a handheld with a mario game over a console. You forgot one thing, the Wii had the casuals pockets backing it and it looks like the WiiU is in a very different/tough situation. The reason i think MK & NSMB sold very well on the Wii is because of the casuals buying it for their child and i doubt that parent will go out and buy a Wii U just for NSMBU or MKU.

But i could be wrong! maybe Nintendo will do something to bring the casuals back and save the Wii U.

that is true the only way you can have both casuals and the hardcore is if you pull a M$ and ditch one of them half way through the gen
