It was hype without substance, most likely. Nintendo was trying to entice third-party developers by creating a perception that third-party developers are important to Nintendo. I don't blame them for that, though it has had the effect of misleading the public somewhat, at least to this point.

However, the Wii U is a next gen device in a current gen software market. I'm not sure that we should be considering absolute judgments yet.
