Which starting Pokemon do you choose from the three elements?

I'm a water kinda guy. I love Squirtle, and his evolution line, and I've picked the water type since. The only one that has disappointed me thus far was Piplup. It wasn't as cool as the rest due to the dual steel/water type sucked.
