Actually it kind of happened already (literally the been there done that moment is done). In 2010 - 2011 the dramatic shift from online facebook gaming (previous casual gaming fad) to smartphone gaming and Angry Bird's rise was the "smartphones will take over gaming" moment that was dreaded. It wasn't as bad as everyone (critics) expected simply because nothing can trump console gaming (at least for now).
Smartphone gaming is currently not as big but there's always a smartphone game release that gets popular every couple of months. In mid to late 2012 it was "Temple Run", now it's "Ruzzle".
The casual gaming market is in limbo right now until the next big fad takes over so, they're just lingering between smartphone gaming, Kinect, & PSMove. It'll come though, and will be predicted as the killer to console gaming ![]()
