I myself wasn't thrilled about the gamepad announcement. Of course, I wasn't thrilled about the Wii controller announcement either, and ended up enjoying the wii controls quite a bit. I have yet to play the Wii U, but I'm sure once I see how it integrates and get used to it, I'll understand their reasoning.
Nintendo is the kind of company who doesn't just do something to do something, they take a lot of considerations on gameplay integration. The one nice thing about the Wii U is that if I DON'T like the gamepad, I still can use a Wii remote or a pro controller, so I won't totally be stuck with it.
