I completely agree. The Wii U gamepad is in now way as innovative as the Wiimote was back in 2006. We all have tablets, Nintendo was late again.

The Wii U pad is not a tablet. It's a controller with a touch screen. A big difference.

But it looks like one and it has less functionality. And you wonder why Wii U isn't selling well.

It's because of the games, or lack there of.

The unpleasant truth for Wii U fans is simply that there are more and better games available on the PS3 and the 360.

A not unreasonable opinion is that it will continue to be this way for at least a year until both platforms taper off new releases as developer focus shifts to Orbis and Durango.

But I agree that Wii U hopefuls, mainly die hard Nintendo fans, probably had unreasonable expectations regarding the Game Pad. Maybe the reality of what the system actually brings to the table is what has tempered enthusiasm among the non-die hard fans.

I remember a few gems that went along the lines of "you won't need a tablet PC because the Wii U will replace it" despite the common knowledge that the Game Pad was just a controller with no processor or system/video memory.

The Wii sold fine for a few years despite the that though.

It really didn't become evident until a couple years into the product cycle that the Wii simply wasn't getting the same level of third party support as the others. It was partly because of the massive gap between processing capabilities but probably moreso because of the differences in demographics when it came to who was the typical buyer for each console.

History shows third party games simply didn't make as much money for developers on the Wii as they did on other platforms, hence the loss of support in later years.

I'm firmly of the notion that the Wii sold tens of millions of consoles on the strengths of Wii Sports and Wii Fit alone. The Wii U has neither. I know that I bought a Wii specifically to play Wii Sports out of the gate back in early 2007 without having a list of other games that I was waiting to buy on the platform. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one.

Out of the gate, neither the PS3 nor the 360 had particularly great third party software libraries either, so I'm not going to make excuses for the Wii U since this applies to virtually every new platform ever released.
