How is Smash debatable? Smash Bros on the N64 was the first in the series. It's a new IP. Whether the idea and concept behind the game is original is debatable, whether it is a new IP or not, isn't. Same goes for Mario Kart. No, the Mario character isn't new, but the Mario Kart game was.
