It is terrible that this is the big "WiiU" news. All thought it was going to be more positive. I certainly would have labeled it PS3 or X360 or Ubisoft news.
That being said, the article opening is a bit sensational. Other consoles recently have not sold as well at opening or had as many titles (and with digital, we really don't know the attach rate -- so that stat can't be compared).
The point that Nintendo could have managed things better is accurate. It tends to more add things on the fly -- and then add them later than announced -- more than Sony and Microsoft. Or at least it gets more noticed by them.
