The psp was popular in Japan. The PS2 in Japan sold almost 22 million and the PSP is nearing the 20 million mark. There are a lot of psp games available both new and (inexpensive) used games. They are all on UMD though, so you can't use them on the Vita. Say you want to pick up some cheap used games or your friends want to lend you some of their psp games. If you get a Vita, then your screwed because you can't play them! Nevermind the very expensive memory cards.
I just bought myself a new PSP in December. It's nice because I've already bought some cheap games and I can borrow the psp games that my girlfriend already owns. WIN-WIN If I would've gotten a Vita then I would have to pay the higher PSN store price for PSP games and I wouldn't be able to use any UMD games from other people. LOSE-LOSE
