It's ridiculous that people actually think the DS will fail to outsell the PS2 even though it is discontinued.

The DS is basically discontinued outside of the Americas.  It has been 89% of the shipments for the past 9 months, and only 30k DS's were shipped elsewhere in the holiday quarter.  The PS2 was even outshipping it this past year from the numbers we can deduce.  We know for Jan-Mar the PS2 shipped 600k compared to the DS shipping 460k.  The DS shipped less than a million in the first two quarters of this Fiscal Year.  In comparison, a rough estimate puts the PS2 at a million for Q1 alone (The PS2/PS3 shipped 2.8 million, the PS3 shipped 1.8 million the previous year, and was down or at best flat for the quarter.)  The DS was likely ahead for the holiday quarter, but sales are rapidly dropping, and there is still a fairly significant gap.

They only expect 150k in Q4 which would be down 67.4% YoY.  If that held true through the year, the DS would only ship 850k in 2013.  This would still leave it below the PS2's total shipment of 155.1 by March 2012.  If it did at least another million in the rest of 2012, then the DS would still be 1.58 million away at the end of 2013.  If it only does 850k that year, it is unlikely that shipments will be high enough to pass the PS2 before being discontinued.
