I love all the little details. I watch movies with a 1080p projector and prefer slower paced movies that let my eyes wander over the screen to soak up all the detail. That adds to the atmosphere and immersion for me. Sure the little baby alien looks absolutely fake, looked fake on VHS too. The big alien looks great in HD and the sets look fantastic.
I like it when I can see the art behind the magic, noticing the strings in the dark crystal doesn't bother me, that only adds to the respect I have for the art. It's all make belief in the end, using well known actors is a much bigger immersion breaker for me. Inglorious bastards almost made my top 50, but the scenes with Brad Pitt hold it down. A shame because Christoph Waltz's performance is near perfect.
The problem I have with most older movies is the sound quality. No amount of restoration can help with the poor sound effects and limited audio range. Modern shows have problems too, far too many stock sound effects are used. There are a couple that you hear all the time, big immersion breaker for me.
