What is everyone's obsession with GIFs? Have I missed something?

I really love gifs... VGChartz needs make some to EPIC WIN over GAF.

I'm not a huge fan. They're alright, but when people post a comment which just contains several GIFs it's quite frustrating (as has happened before).

When done properly, they are effective.
