Why do people cheer for anything. Sports team, politicians, car brands or brands in general. People end up associating their self worth based on things they like and endorse. I always see people complaining about money all the time and than go buy expensive concert or sport event tickets for multiple hundreds of dollars.
More specifically for consoles. I'd at least want the console to do good enough so it doesn't go under like Dreamcast. It doesn't have to be first but a relatively good install base will insure good first and third party support. In some cases when you are last you get end up getting better value like PS plus. Sony would not have done it if they were leading like PS2 days.
