Yep it's Das Boot. Quite a change to go from that to The neverending story.
I watched the director's cut, at almost 3.5 hours. I read that the uncut version mostly adds more on the monotony of life on board the submarine. It's claustrophobic enough for me. Great film that draws you in, best submarine movie I know. And it puts all those German lessons I had to sit through in high school to some use.

Better than The Hunt for Red October or Crimson Tide?

Yep, I like Das Boot better. Modern submarines have a totally different feel. Das boot is a bunch of kids stuck in a tube trying to survive while realizing what they got themselves into and what for. Much better then Hunt for red october or Crimson Tide.

I can't remember the name of the first submarine movie I saw. I saw it in the early 80's on tv. A submarine sinks at the beginning of the movie and the men on board try to survive waiting for rescue. It was quite terrifying at a young age, the water rushing in, leaking doors, people drowning. It gave me a few nightmares. I think the few survivors eventually got rescued after the rescue crew cut a hole in the side of the submarine to get them out.
