I wouldn't really say that.  3,000,000 units sold in the time the Wii U has been out isn't that bad, it's just nowhere near what they expected (or what others expected).  It is also CURRENTLY not having much going for it as no games are being released (at least, no big ones).

By the end of Q3, according to Nintendo's Financial report, the Wii U sold 430k in EUR, 890k in US, and 627k in Japan. Which brings a total of 1.94 million. Add Australia, Canada, Mexico and Latin America, which was not shared by Nintendo, the result is more than ''under 2 million sold.''

Canada, Australia, and Latin America are tiny markets. Those are very poor sales, reminscent of the GameCube. They are probably over 2 million but not by much through Christmas, without supply constraints.

Demand for the system is extremely soft, there's no way to spin it. Those Euro sales in particular are horrid, they couldn't even sell half their inventory through Christmas even with a new Mario game.
