“It takes time to understand the charm of Wii U." - This is a huge ongoing problem. By ongoing I mean it'll dog WiiU it's whole life. Their best bet is to create great experiences that maximize the gamepad play and create a passionate fan base which becomes their ambassadors to the public and other gamers.
My fear is we'll have an Android tablet/console which will do it better, faster and cheaper than Nintendo, stealing any potential for WiiU's long term success. So far though, no sign of an Android console that does dual screens. But it could happen easily.
