You just proved my point. Tetris was bundled with the Game Boy and when it wasn't bundled did little to the NES. When Nintendo was threatened all-around by competition by the wonderswan and by the Playstation, the one thing that kept it in the game was Pokemon.
A core game.
My point is that no matter whether the game is aimed at casuals or at the core crowd, what matters is that the game touch a cord with everyone, so much that everyone needs to have it. And these trends change over time.......
To ask Nintendo to continue exploiting treasures they found in one era is often a bad idea, since these treasures are fleeting and they need to be on the lookout for the next culturally-relevant idea.
I'm sure fashion has a similar concept...
