 I'm sure Jade Empire made enough to get a sequel, games have gotten sequels on much less.  However, I think Microsoft was more interested in pushing new IP's out at the start of the 360 generation rather than relying on IP's from the xbox generation.  

Then EA bought Bioware and ran with the more successful Mass Effect Franchise.  If you look at the link I posted, Bioware hasn't ruled out returning to Jade Empire, so I don't think Jade Empire did that bad for them.  

I wouldn't put much trust in that article it didn't even get the released date for the game right.  It was released on April 12th, 2005 not in 2004.
