There is 1000x as much fun to be had on an iPad mini compared to the WiiU right now. You, or rather he, made the right choice.
You can even play The Walking Dead on the iPad. Once it's jailbroken, he'll be able to use it as an emulator together with a controller (and preferably a book stand). It's an amazing device with some amazing games, not to mention productivity apps, books/comics, educational content, iTunes, iTunes U... Are you really that surprised he wanted it more than a WiiU?
