I think it's obvious that video games cause violence, as well as movies, the bible, comics, the Quran, music, etc. etc.
The problem is that human are violent period. We are the only animals that torture for fun (though some debate that the domestic cat does this as well). Look at the gladiators in ancient Rome or the Salem witch trials - humans love violence.
Video games do not cause this, they are merely a reflection of this. Look at the most popular games - Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, Halo, Zelda, even Mario is pretty violent. There are obviously some games that aren't bad (like Wii Sports and Kinect) but we LOVE violence. Love it. We love the Joker even though he murders tons of innocent people. Darth Vader is awesome even though he oversaw the genocide of an entire people. Indiana Jones, James Bond, and Luke Skywalker are great heroes even though they murder lots of people.
School shootings and serial killers fascinate us. No one cares about the victims. Everyone knows Jeffrey Dahmer - can anyone name one of his victims? He had 17. Everyone knows Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, but only a couple of their victims. See where I am getting at? We are FASCINATED by violence.
So basically what I am saying is that video games may not cause violence, but they are a reflection of our blood thirsty world.
It's just human nature. The need to be superior.
