Two entirely different philosophies. Sony continually push the ten year lifecycle, so they continue to work on the PS3, while Microsoft have clearly moved all their resources to the 720. I believe Sony's strategy is better because it offers new franchises for the PS4 such as TLOU and Puppeteer. I think we'll probably still see some first party games for the PS3 in 2014 (the year the PS4 releases IMO).
On a side note, I think Kaz'z recent comment about waiting for the other studios to show their hand first wasn't because, as he said 'so that they can't copy us' it was to make MS think twice about releasing earlier, which feeds into helping the delay of their own console. It's a cat and mouse game that Sony play.
I also think that Nintendo have just offered Microsoft and Sony the perfect way of extending their consoles. Why develop games for the Wiiu only, when you could make them multiplat and offer them to a userbase of 145 million? This could help ALL concerned, so please don't view that as a negative for Nintendo.
