The reason why people compare it is because Sony already has a free service comparable to Xbox Live. It's used as a competitive factor because it goes above and beyond for gamers if that make it easier to understand. Its no Valve, but still.

The reason doesn't make sense or excuse the silliness of the comparison. Live isn't a discount service. PS+ is. PS+ wipes the floor with Live in terms if discounts and freebies. Because it's a discount service. XBL wipes the floor with PS+ as an online gaming service because that's what it is.

The value found in each isn't factual either, it's entirely subjective.

Sony is getting competitive because of Valve and also that they wont justify making people pay just to use their internet (just like Nintendo). Have you seen the sales Sony has been having off of PSN Plus? There are games that are between 30-50% off. You're right about it being subjective, but I don't see how Xbox Live is superior (just my thinking because I do graphic design work). I think Xbox Live is more aesthetically pleasing and has a much better format which gives the illusion of being superior when its just a tesament to how the designers of the Xbox Live program are. Its much better for community organized gaming.
