If you could only purchase one for the rest of your life, I would recommend Wii U. If you need something to entertain you right now, I would say 3DS. But it seems like you're interested in the long run, so the answer has to be Wii U. Consoles libraries are generally better than portable libraries.
Still, you can't go wrong with either. Both are backwards compatible, both have huge potential, and both will be carefully supported by Nintendo for years to come.
