Platinum Games is another good example. Heck, we voted it the best dev of all time so why not!

I think the only reason Platinum exists is because Mikami, Inaba and Kamiya wanted to create an independent studio where they were able to make the kinds of games they wanted to make without their publisher breathing down their neck and telling them which games to work on.  Being acquired by Nintendo would defeat the whole purpose the studio was formed in the first place.  I think games like Bayonetta and Wonderful 101 were borne out of that sense of creative freedom where they literally had no limits on what they could make, as they were paying for it all themselves and looking for a publisher was merely a secondary concern.
