I always found WRPGs to be great in theory, yet they fall apart in execution. The combat systems are usually the LAST thing I truly like about them as they are usually half baked and wonky. It's their story telling mechanics(not to be confused with actual story) that captivate the audience. I have yet to play a WRPG that touches the grand story telling of the ol JRPGs of SNES/PS1/PS2 era. Yet the choice making and customization options are always fun in those games.
Fact: WRPG combat is very loose in comparison to fine tuned traditional JRPG turnbased. Take Mass Effect for instance. Love the series, yet that limited enemy spawns, short lived leveling systems, wonky shooting mechanics are no comparison to the flowing combat from any given FF game(even FFXIII to an extent).
Fact 2: The best Action RPG series in existance is still Kingdom Hearts anyway, so WRPGs can suck on that too :P (*flameshield*)
So very happy JRPGs are tryin to return to form. They have been sorely missed.
