I don't know if HD has anything to do with it. Nintendo always seems to struggle to have a good supply of games and obviously NintendoLand and NSMBU weren't the 1-2 punch they had hoped. HD won't help of course but at least they are more willing (it seems) to play with others to get games developed (such as Super Smash Bros and this new FE)
You are right, they aren't in a good position at the moment and this did scream of damage control.
