I'd say that lower than expected sales for NSMB2 have to do with the fact that it's really, really, really light on new content, thus no widespread excitement. It's not that people don't want SMB as much as before anymore, it's that they do not tolerate an effort that is below the standards they expect. NSMBU's sales are held back by a hardware price and the lack of other must-have software. Any way you slice it, $360 is a lot of money for a single game (or $410 for two games, if you go with the Deluxe Set). |
Okay, you were saying that the U didn't have a good buildup and I agreed. I don't think the DS had so much going for it by 2006 either. Actually, I bought my DS Lite with NSMB, it was a system seller for me. Back then, I only bought that and FFIV GBA. I'm not saying the DS was barren, but it had a weak buildup up until I think it was mid-2005 when Nintendogs came out. Contrasting NSMB's system-selling quality on the DS to NSMBU, I personally think NSMB lost its system-seller quality a while ago.
About cannibalization, I agree that in some cases releasing two games in a series together (home + HH) can give a solid 1-2 punch, but in this case it's too many too often it leads to cannibalization, as much as a Kart U would have been cannibalized by MK7 (too much too soon), also compounded by the success of the predecessors (MKWii and NSMBWii respectively).
I also agree that 360 is a high-price for even NSMB to push, even MK. So I agree and disagree with you.
