When Nintendo or Sony faced a hurdle in the market, they handled it in different ways. Nintendo usually resorted to screwing over the 3rd parties with high regulation, whereas Sony's base was built with such shunned 3rd parties, so their attempts usually resulted in screwing over the consumer rather than the 3rd party developer. To add to this, Nintendo are a bit of a victim of their own success, and 3rd party developers sometimes refuse to release certain genres on Nintendo consoles, because Nintendo usually has them sewn up with their own games.
