Very interesting. Is microsoft doing this to increase sales or increase value?

If it is sales then they are really worried about the other competition that month and are doing this as a last ditch effort to save the game. Consumers like me who only have GeOW 3 are now more likely to buy it.

Or they expect the game to sell well but are worried about a consumer backlash. "This isn't even half the game GeOW 3 was yet it costs just as much." They are adding this to make consumers believe $60 is a fair price.

It would be really bad if both of these reasons are true.

Well for starters this is a $20 value so it should shut up the critics who are saying this may be overpriced.

As for sales it won't be as front loaded as a holiday Gears release, but its definately going to outsell competition like God of War Ascension no problem.

There is more competition in March than GOW:A. Tomb Raider, South Park, and Army of Two are all big games that could steal the thunder. This game is made by a different developer with a different type of campaign releasing in a non traditional month all while lacking the franchises main character. I can guarantee someone is worried about it as demonstrated by the new preview. Instead of showing off the game as "oh cool get this shit" they are needing to say "see, this one really is updated." Usually these upgrades would not receive such emphasis.
