You should play the Wii version; Radiant Dawn. It's a good introduction to the series and will keep people ticking over until the 3DS game launches.

I think it would be better for him to play the gamecube one first(Path of Radiance), because the wii version ( Radiant Dawn) is a direct sequel to path of radiance, so he wouldn't understand the story very well.
