"It's most successful game last year was Minecraft on Xbox Live Arcade, while titles such as Trials Evolution were big sellers"

Well Halo 4 outsold it by 2 million and with 4 months less on the market.

Retail games will not go away anytime soon. Heck, there are still a lot of CDs out there for music / audiobooks etc. I think the digital distribution will add another option for consumers. I really like my limited editions and BluRay cases, but games like Walking Dead would not exist without digital distribution. I think episodic content on XBLA and a retail release for the full package is actually a pretty good move. Instead of buying a game for $60.

Week one: Epdisode 1 for $10, multiplayer for $10.
Week two: Epdisode 2 for $10
Week three: Episode 3 for $10
Week four: Episode 4 for $10
Week five: Episode 5 for $10 and retail release as the total package for $60

Alan Wake 2 would be perfect for this kind of distribution. CoD not so much. So it really comes down to the game and how it works.

But that makes no sense!

You can't make the 2nd episode in a week. It is just delaying the launch of the actual game, because it basically all has to be finished for the first week

If I am following him correctly what he is saying is the developer would make the game and have a retail release. However they would also have an episodic release of the game online for 10 bucks a week. So the game would be already made and they would just release a few chapters of the game a week online or you could buy the entire release in stores.

He is saying that you can have the full retail package in week 5, I suppose it only really delays the release by a few weeks, but I just don't think episodic gaming really makes sense. I can understand that you might want to make stuff avaliable in episodes, but from a development perspective that is not great. I suppose it might work better if you design your game around it (I haven't played the Walking Dead), but it really just seems a comprimise. I get that you might want to lure people in with a lower initial price point, but it would annoy me if I have to wait 5 weeks so I can have the full physical copy
