Personally I'd say that PS3 would have been a better choice at that particular point, especially if you'd been gaming on Wii all of last generation.
I'm sure Wii-U will flourish into a fantastic console in the future. Perhaps it'll reach great levels by this Christmas, perhaps it'll do it by next year. But PS3 is there now, and not only that, it's had 5+ years of fantastic games coming for it, all of which you can pick up for ridiculously cheap. You've got the best of the old and the new with it.
And then if you decide in a year's time "Wii-U has lots of games I'd like to play", then you can just trade in your PS3 and pick up a Wii-U.
But at the end of the day, no choice you make is going to be wrong, really.
