46. District 9, 2009, Neill Blomkamp

I almost dismissed this film as I was confusing it with District 13-U (original was good fun but District 13-U bleh)
District 9 was a great surprise, I hardly knew anything about it (hence the confusion) and it turned out to be rather great. On the surface you have a funny comedy about incompetent aliens getting stranded on earth. Beneath the surface it is riddled with moral issues, leading with blatent references to apartheid. The way the 'humanitarian' issues are handled in the refugee camp feels realistic and the mockumentary style fliming is very well done. Add some very convincing special effects and you have one of the best sci-fi films of the decade. Avatar doesn't hold a candle to this imo.

Couldn't agree more. Although I really like Avatar, too :)
