The Basic model had a price cut coming written all over it when it debuted at$299 when a vastly superior model was bundled wth a game at $249. Brand is a power thing and Wii firmly burned into people's minds that it is cheap fun. Here, I feel Nintendo disrespected the Nintendo moms. Kids ask for Wii U, grab the lower priced one, but it isnt cheaper.
Nintendo tried to upsell as HD but was really using bargain components. Here I feel Nintendo disrespected the hardcore buyers. Yes, your Camry may have more torque and horse power than our old BMW and MB, but it's still a camry and once the new HD Twins came out, Wii U would look just as disperate as Wii looked in comparison.
Now was it a good business strategy? I partially agree that it has potential to be profitable. But then where is the marketing and more importantly where are the games? Iwata said he learned a lesson from 3DS that they deferred too much to 3rd parties and needed to come out strong with their own franchises. Where are the four horsemen for Wii U?
