The issue with mario is that Nintendo released nsmb 2 and nsmbu too damn close together (which diluted the hype that should have existed for nsmbu)...maybe if there was some kind of connectivity between the 2 games, or they were somehow directly related this could've worked to nintendo's advantage, but as it stands, they really just released 2 similar games for 2 different consoles, in a similar time frame which probably kinda killed peoples exitement...a new mario game is something to look forward to, get excited about, crave, have sleepless nights waiting for (or so nintendo would want you to believe), so releasing more than one similar game at roughly the same time kinda dilutes that desire somewhat for many people (I know this strategy has worked for nintendo in the past but that's when the games were more closly related...and this time it wasn't a planned strategy just bad timing)...I mean why rush out and buy a console to play the brand spanking new 2d mario game, when you've just been playing a brand spanking new 2d mario game on a console you already own for the last 2 months??? It's unfair cos nsmb2 on 3ds sucks while nsmbu is actually pretty good, and I fear the former has tainted the latter in some peoples eyes.
Also, releasing a 3d mario game or something that actually shows off what the wii u is capable of might have had a better impact on the consumer. I mean, aside from being in hi-def, there's really nothing about the game that couldn't have been possible on the wii with slightly weaker graphics. Lotta people would've seen nsmbu in shops on demo screens and said 'hm, is that all this machine is capable of?'...I remember when the n64 launched and mario 64 blew peoples minds. That's the effect nintendo should go for these days but they don't seem interested.
