You don't need to be an employee at sony to understand the idea of a 10 year life cycle.
Just look at examples like the PS2 and PSP, both are suppose to have 10 year life cycles but after 6-7 years the successor is released but the console itself maintains production and some software support for the remaining duration of that lifecycle.
The 10 year life cycle excuse also allows them to dismiss rumours of a successor and maintain consumer confidence that their purchase won't be discontinued prematurely.
The PS4 will launch late 2013, that means by that time the PS3 will be 7 or so years old, then expect for the next several years after that for the PS3 to get some PS4 ports as well as annual titles such as Fifa.
