PSX = Winner PS2 = Winner PS3 = Loser The PS3 took the entire generation to barely outsell the Xbox 360 and it will never beat the Wii. The Playstation brand is half what it used to be. During the last two generation if you wanted to play the best games you had to have a PS1 and then a PS2. But this gen people decided they didn't need a PS3 because they were happy with their Xbox 360 or Wii. The Playstation brand has fallen a long way while the Xbox brand has seen a huge increase in popularity. As for the Nextbox. Who care if MS supports the 360 after the Nextbox is released? New games on the newest consoles are much more appealing than games on an old console. I stopped buying PS2 games after the next gen started. Just because it was still supported doesn't mean any of it was worth buying. |
As you accept the well known fact that both PSX and PS2 were clear winners in their respective generations, it's also important to keep in mind how their competitors had lost out to the market. By not being able to sell through 30 mn+ and being discontinued earlier in their cycle. N 64 was an exception, but it performed relatively poor to PSX,(32.9 mn sold to 102.49 mn). You can tag them as losers, but when PS3 is tagged, we're at a dispute. PS3 sells, outpaces others including current gen Wii U on a worldwide level and continues to be shipped. Of course, in a competitive market you are bound to gain or lose a bit, but failing to sell any shipped goods at all is an issue.
When you stopped PS2 gaming, things around didn't change for the better yet, there were probably many others who still picked up one and began mashing buttons on the dualshock, obliging Sony to support it longer than expected into the seventh gen. FYI - It just got discontinued a few days ago when shipping ceased in Japan. http://www.destructoid.com/end-of-an-era-ps2-stops-shipping-in-japan-241393.phtml
"Who cares if MS support the 360 after Nextbox is released?" Well, the emerging markets like Brazil and other parts of Asia do, where the HD consoles have only begun picking up steam since 2010. It would simply be unfair not to mention a minority of current 360 fan base from the major international markets looking forward to it as well. MS would definitely continue to regard them with new Kinect titles, arcade ones and continued XBL service, but how long we can’t know yet as of now. As I mentioned, it’s better if they genuinely focused on NextBox for the better business drive.
