I have crafted myself some bombs and I do try to use them, but am generally more reliant on magic.

It may be worth investing in combat, have you at least grabbed at least one level of the position skill? It reduces the amount of damage you take when backstabbed, which starts at 200% damage which on the stronger enemies is basically instant death.

Yeah, that one I have and possibly 1 or 2 others, but is it probably 80% magic
