^You likely haven't heard that, because lots of people didn't "almost quit console gaming", but quit console gaming for all?
From mid to late 90's the transition to 3D didn't work quite well, along with the lack of quality requirements (on PS) that Sega and Nintendo had, quality of console games went steep downhill, that resulted in lots of console gamers turning to PC. On PC you could have Command & Conquer, Warcraft, FPS's (that were at the time still rather new) that you even could play online.
