A key difference is that Saddam was installed as president for life then he got overthrown. Mandela had no material power and was thrown in prison for a couple of decades for trying to achieve equal rights for black (and coloured) South Africans. The only people who were sad that Saddam was overthrown are his Tikrit clan-mates. The majority Shiite population certainly were happy to see the back of him, though they probably would have preferred US funding of a insurrection rather than a US invasion and occupation; would have been cheaper than an invasion and occupation too. Of course that would have put the US and Iran on the same side in Iraq and we couldn't have that could we?
