If you ignore hardware then what makes something next gen becomes very messy (release date, name etc all have issues when compared to PS3 slim, or xbox elite - think about it ;) )

The controller wasn't next gen. If it was then everyone would have shifted to motion controls and they certainly haven't. PC gamers ignored motion controls altogether (for the most part) and more people play with pads then with motion controls. The Wii was in no way next-gen and the wii u has yet to show itself as being next-gen.
