Because as free people the government doesn't decide what we can or can't own based on "usefulness." If people own handguns it's because THEY have a reason, and that's fine enough. They're law-abiding adults and shouldn't have a state telling them which property is necessary. 

It's not "usefullness" in which I argue it's handguns should be banned, it's a safty concern. While most gun owners will be law biding, 60% of Homicides in the USA are gun related. I think no handguns => less murders, like in Japan or Korea. A rifle does everything a handgun does fine, it protects your house, can be used for hunting, and can fit in an average American car no problem, it's already portable enough. You don't need to take a gun with you into Wal-Mart because you have your reasons.

Having a reason isn't enough to have a device designed for killing. Why don't I just start walking down the street with a bottle of chloroform and date rape drugs for my own reason. Is that a good enough reason to carry crap like that? Maybe 99% of people who do that won't rape someone, but there will always be one psycho who see an opportunity.
