I don't know, maybe cause it's the longest (minus the 2600) and bestelling console EVER.  Still, even if they didn't put out a press release, they would have at least emailed all the big gaming sites with the info.  Of course, the vast majority of serious gaming sites only have articles about it being discontinued in Japan.  While I've only seen 2 sites try and stretch the info to be for WW, as well as give outdated shipment data for the final tally.  When its time, Sony isnt going to be like, "Oh and btw, we stopped producing the PS2, it probably ended up somewhere over 150M." 

Nintendo made the Famicom for 20 years in Japan, from 1983-2003.

Well, poo.  I'll just edit that part out, as I'm sure there may be more.  I'll just have to settle for best selling.
