The Wii U only looks "bad" in comparison to the Wii and because, unlike the previous generation, all previous generation consoles are still selling fairly well. By the time the XBox 360 came out the XBox and Gamecube were selling at a very slow rate, and even the Wii is selling at a faster rate today than they were back then.
The Wii U is selling quite well and, while non-holiday sales are important, being that 40% to 60% of sales can happen in the last quarter of the year, Nintendo could have very impressive sales this year if they have a really strong software line-up in the second half of the year.
