Somebody gets it! This thread should be about how clueless people are at predicting hardware sales. No offense but anyone expecting a number higher than 3.5M is simply delusional. If I make a complete nonsensical prediction like the Wii U will sell 2M in Jan 2013 should we should call it a flop or major flop if it sells 800k? If Wii U doesn't SHIP 4.5M by April fools day, start the flop thread. At the same time the launch only would be a flop not the system that early...cough..3DS...cough...PS3. |
Nah I think that unless my skills of deduction are very off, this thread is a really roundabout response to the sales numbers of a certain Sony product. In which case, prodcuts are judged based on how they perform in relationship to other similar products in a given market.
The Wii U's numbers for its first month (1.8mil) are about double the X-Box 360's (940K), about triple the PS3's (560K), and few hundred thousand off from the Wii (about 2 million). So, flop doesn't seem apt.
Meanwhile, if we take a game like, say, Playstation All Stars Battle Royale and compare it with its peers, we get results like this.
At one month.
Smash Bros Brawl- 1.5 million
Mortal Kombat- 908K
Street Fighter IV X-Box 360- 860 K
Street Fighter IV- PS3-880 K
Soul Calibur 4- PS3- 670K
Marvel vs Capcom 3- PS3- 567 K
Marvel vs Capcom 3- X-Box 360- 450 K
PSASBR- 342k
Soul Calibur 5- PS3- 318 K
Street Fighter X Tekken (PS3)- 297K
Persona 4 Arena- 227K
Epic Mickey- 1.4 million
Dishonored (360)- 680K
Spec Ops The Line (PS3)- 205K
Kid Icarus: Uprising- 588K
That's Playstation All Stars Battle Royale compared to other fighting games and other new (and newish) IPs. Everyone can decide for themselves what is and isn't a flop.
