I would think there is a bit of precedent on the romance rumor, just because the last two Zeldas have played on the Link/Zelda relationship and Zelda's characterization in particular. Zelda's growth as a character over the course of Spirit Tracks was the most memorable thing about that game, and Zelda's Skyward Sword iteration seemed to be well-liked by gamers.
Skyward Sword is a good building block in terms of gameplay and level design. They just need to rethink overarching world-design and story progression.
