Otherwise i will go on record and say that I love the new windows 8 options and flexibility on my desktop. Pending how I feel like, I can decide to log in to classic windows interface only or the new metro interface and use it with a touch screen monitor I have, or a logitech T650 touchpad which works wonderfully. If I get bored of that, I can just use the standard mouse/keyboard combo with the modern UI/classic desktop combination across 3 monitors and have them all scale beautifuly.

Windows 7 is not half as flexible as this.

The problem is the desktop win8 should default to the "classic" setup vs the obviously touch designed Metro interface. Then there should be a suggestion to use Metro when it recognizes you have a touch interface. 

Currently it defaults to the UI that is not best suited for keyboard and mouse. Then only the tech savy users will figure out how to set it to classic mode.

The design should default to what is best for that device. Not force a user to be enlightenend enough to just know their is a magical fix.

Once you install classic shell it defaults to classic desktop. it even disables the bottom left corner which by default takes you to metro. The only way metro can be reached once you put classic shell is by choice(mouse to top corner and wait for charms tomappear and then click on start).

 I agree that more options enabled by windows 8 by default would be nice, jowever i wouldnt consider installing a program something that "tech savy" users are only able to do. if a user is not comfortable installing programs, they have no business upgrading operating systems...

Everyone needs to keep in mind that this is new windows 1.0 and these features like desktop detection and start button option may yet come to windows 8.  I expect big things from service pack 1...

Italics: I think you greatly overestimate the skills of the majority people who use computers on a daily basis.

 

I don't think Win8 is a bad operating system.  I played around with it for a bit at the Appl... I mean Microsoft Store for a while one day and it was fine.  I just don't see why I need it over Win7.  And no I am not going to upgrade to Win8 just so I can install some programs to get it to behave like an OS I already own.
