1) You're likely having a router setting issue. However, in Miiverse you may need to go to the profile and check all settings.
2) Yeah, any USB router that either has the Y-connecter (can even buy that separately) or its own separate power cord will work. But honestly, unless you're gonna start buying all game digitally, you can wait on that. First priority will be your router issue. My buddy had an old router from his cable/internet company... wouldn't work right. He just went out and bought a new router and gave the other one back to the company (saves monthly rental fee anyways). Now the WiiU is perfectly fine.
