Your "once again" has been proven wrong outside of Wii/PS360 scenario. And nothing as of now suggest that scenario will repeat since chances are high nextgen won't have much power over Wii U (check this). This by no means guarantee Wii U will be a viable platform, depends on how Nintendo and 3rd parties will handle it, there're multiple ways to screw it up. But as a hardware it certainly viable for 3rd party ports or whatever fits the demand. Once again, here goes your entire point, Nintendo won't launch new hardware in 2 or 3 years even it fails completely.
GC failed as hard as it could possibly be for Nintendo (not due to hardware or lack of DVD drive as you've suggested), and even then it took 5 years before successor's release.
